PILOT MOUNTAIN — The varsity volleyball team wrapped up the month of August with a pair of defeats, a road loss at East Surry and a home loss at the hands of Alleghany.

East Surry 3, Ashe 0

The Lady Cardinals earned a three set sweep over Ashe County with set scores of 25-11, 25-5 and 25-11.

East Surry senior Bethany Clayton led all players with 14 kills. Sarah Marion added five, Maggie Holt had five and Allie Bruner added four.

Ashe was led by Mattie Joines and Bella Potter who each had three kills. Rayna Blevins added two kills and Cori Richardson tallied one.

Both teams served the ball well with Ashe and East Surry committing only four service errors apiece.

East Surry really shined in the shot blocking department with 16 blocked shots as a team compared to just one for Ashe. Holt and freshman Emma Brown recorded four blocks apiece and Clayton added three blocks at the net.

Sophomore Kelsey Heflin did an admirable job setting up the office for East Surry with 23 assists and zero ball handling errors. Marley Eller led Ashe with four assists.

Alleghany 3, Ashe 0

The Mountain Valley Athletic Conference opener did not go quite as planned for the Lady Huskies. Alleghany came out and won the first set, 25-16, and never looked back. The Lady Trojans capped off the sweep with a 25-12 win in the second set and a 25-18 win in the third set.

Ashe County fell to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the MVAC. Alleghany upped its record to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the MVAC.
