WEST JEFFERSON — An already-impressive start to the 2017 season continued on Wednesday when the Lady Huskies handed East Wilkes their first conference loss of the season and moved into a tie for first place.
Ashe was able to earn a 6-3 victory over the Cardinals.
“This was a very big conference win for us. The ladies played very solid singles matches. I commend their effort,” said Ashe County head coach Larry Dix.
The Lady Huskies won five of the six singles and they did that without fifth seeded Brooke Rutherford who missed the contest with an ankle injury. Ashley Dollar moved into the top six and won her singles match which was key to the team scoring the overall victory.
Ashe County’s top seed Caroline Current played a strong match and took down Leah Nance in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Ashe picked up its second win in the second seeded matchup with Morgan Church taking a 6-1, 6-2 win over Katie Stokes.
In the third seeded match, East Wilkes earned its lone singles victory, a 6-4, 6-4 win for Faith Roberts over Mackenzie Wood.
Anna Corley defeated Lauren Rakes in the fourth seeded match, 6-2, 6-4. Karoline Keith needed a tiebreaker to win the first set against Jordan Schubart, 7-6, but had an easier time in the second set with a 6-3 win.
In the sixth seeded singles match, the freshman Dollar stepped up and earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Lauren Felts that clinched the match victory for Ashe.
The Cardinals won two of the three doubles contests. Nance and Roberts beat Church and Current, 8-5, and the team of Stokes and Rakes beat Wood and Corley, 8-5.
Dollar and Keith cruised to an 8-1 victory against Schubart and Samantha Carter.
Both Ashe County and East Wilkes have one conference loss and are in a tie for first place at the top of the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
Ashe 9, West Wilkes 0
On Thursday, the Lady Huskies capped off a strong week of play with a 9-0 win over West Wilkes.
“This win gives us wins over all other conference 2A teams so this was huge for us,” said Coach Dix. “I am so proud of this team. They played a controlled game with good shot selection. Shots were much more consistent with good court coverage.”
Ashe County is now 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the MVAC.
