WEST JEFFERSON — The Ashe County junior varsity sports have had several bright moments to be proud of early in the fall season.

The JV football season enters their off week with a 2-1 record. After opening the season with a loss at Watauga, the Huskies have since bounced back to defeat Alleghany and West Caldwell. In the West Caldwell win, Coach Brian Hampton commended the efforts of Gabe Bare, Ryan Blevins, Jaydon Treadway and Jackson Risk on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, Dawson Cox, Keenan Witherspoon and Austin Poe all had big games to help Ashe earn their second win.

On the soccer field, the JV team recently picked up a 2-0 shutout victory over Hibriten.

The JV volleyball team is also off to a tremendous start with nearly a month of play in the books. The Lady Huskies are 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

Against East Surry, Ashe earned a hard-fought 2-0 victory. The Lady Huskies won the first set, 25-23, and won the second set by a 25-18 score.

Ashe lost its first conference match to Alleghany by a 2-1 score, but quickly bounced back with a 2-0 win over Elkin. Ashe took the first set, 25-22 and the second set, 25-14.

The team’s most recent match was against North Wilkes on Sept. 7. The Lady Vikings came out strong and won the first set, 25-23. However, Ashe stormed back and easily won the next two sets to win the match, 25-13 and 25-10.
