WEST JEFFERSON — It was a tough trio of matches off the mountain last week for the varsity soccer team. The Huskies were able to get a 5-0 win over Alleghany but the team came up short at Starmount and at Mount Airy.

Starmount handed the Huskies their first mercy rule defeat since the rule was instituted four years ago, a 9-0 loss in Boonville on Monday. Victor Maya, Jordan Anderson and Andres Ocampo each scored twice for the Rams while Jayven Najera, Jose Patino and Marlon Mejia each added one score apiece.

The Huskies had to travel back down the mountain on Tuesday for a non-conference tilt at Mount Airy. Ashe put up a good fight against one of the best 1A teams in the area, but came up short in a 4-3 loss. The two teams were tied 2-2 at the half. The Mount Airy Bears are still unbeaten at 17-0 on the season. Jesus Lachino scored twice for the Bears. Robert Brown and Simon Cawley each added one goal.

Ashe did get back in the win column with a 5-0 win over Alleghany on Wednesday.

After these three matches, Ashe is now 10-7 overall and 6-2 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
