Memorial Day weekend in West Jefferson will have new, fun events for the whole family as plans go forward for foot races in town, barbecue and other activities.

Jared Yelton came to the West Jefferson Board of Aldermen meeting last week seeking and receiving permission for events he is coordinating for Saturday, May 28.

Yelton, a local runner, said he is planning a 5k and a 10k foot race around town in hopes of boosting tourism to the town and raising funds for Project Graduation. Other activities he is planning include a kid’s run and other fun things for kids.

Working with the Ashe County Farmers Market and the Backstreet Park, Yelton said barbecue will be sold. Joe Stanley with the farmers market said area barbecue champion James Killen will be cooking. Visitors to the farmers market have enjoyed Killen’s barbecue for several years.

Yelton said GE Aviation is a major sponsor for the event. Cost for entering the races was noted as $25 for the 5k and $30 for the 10k. Interest has been shown by runners from out of the area, Yelton said. Proceeds will benefit the annual after graduation party for Ashe County High School offering a safe and fun event for graduates.

“I am thrilled beyond words,” said Diane Eldreth with Project Graduation. “We appreciate the town supporting plans for this event.”

Yelton said he wants the race and accompanying events to be an all-day event to bring people downtown. He plans to return to the West Jefferson Board of Aldermen meeting with more information about the event and request for street closures and traffic control during the foot races.
