With the JV lady Huskies bouncing back from a conference opening loss at Surry Central, the Huskies hosted the Starmount Rams in another conference match up. The Huskies claimed the 37-23 victory over their conference foe to head into the Watauga game last Friday on a winning note. At Watauga, the Huskies had a tough game and fell behind to the Pioneers in the fourth quarter as the Pioneers claimed the 31-20 victory over the Huskies.

Against Starmount, the game opened up with a slow first quarter with a total of six points being scored, four by Ashe, two by Starmount. In the second quarter, the Huskies found a stride and scored ten points compared to the seven of their opponents and Ashe clung to a 14-9 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Rams were able to cut into the Huskies’ lead as Ashe was only able to score five points during the quarter compared to the Rams’ seven points. With the lead being cut to only three points at the start of the fourth quarter, Ashe won the game with solid defense in the fourth quarter. By only allotting the Rams seven points in the quarter, Ashe delivered a deadening eighteen-point quarter against the Rams to earn the final 37-23 victory.

Jessica Walker led the Huskies with sixteen points in the game, and Lizzie Hanes added nine points for the Huskies. Charity Shatley added five points, Alexis Greene three points, Brittany Lyalls two points, and Cara Church and Courtney Bowers each added one point.

The victory over Starmount allowed the Huskies to head into their match up with the Pioneers on a winning note. However, the Pioneers took advantage of a 15-4 fourth quarter to claim the 31-20 victory over the Huskies.

Ashe led the majority of the game and took an early lead in the first quarter with a 6-2 performance to open the game. In the second quarter, the Pioneers cut the lead to only two points and the teams stood at 10-8, with the Huskies leading, at halftime.

Watauga continued to slowly chip away and at the end of the third quarter, they had managed to tie the score up at 16-16 to set up the fourth quarter showdown. With the game easily swinging either way, the key was in this scenario, to simply shut down the other team in the fourth quarter of this game. The Pioneers successfully shut down the Huskies by holding them to only four points in the final quarter while they scored an impressive fifteen points to lead to the 31-20 victory over Ashe.

Once again, Jessica Walker led the Huskies with an eleven point performance. Chandler Christensen added four points, Charity Shatley had three points, and Alexis Greene and Brittany Lyalls had one point each in the Huskies game.

The Huskies return to action next Wednesday, January 3 with a home game against the Avery Vikings.
