To open the event for the Bulldogs, wrestling head coach Dale Wineberg performed a display match that included information on how a wrestling match operates, including the scoring technique, and then entertained the crowd with an inter squad scrimmage.
Following the wrestling team, the Blue and Silver girls Bulldogs took the spotlight as they took the court. The showdown was entirely a friendly contest, but each team took the opportunity to improve on their game, as they also shook off the dust from the holiday break. In an unfamiliar sight to the Bulldogs’ spectators, the score was not a factor in the game. The game was two halves, with each half being a fifteen-minute running clock, and score was reset at halftime. The girls played an excellent game and it was hard to tell that it was only a friendly with the intensity and enthusiasm of the players.
The boys took the court after the conclusion of the girls’ game and their performance was not any different than the girls. With their game being a friendly also, meaning no records or significance on the game except experience and fun, they also played very intense and gave the audience an enjoyable show.
Mike Johnson expressed his thanks to the Ashe County Middle School Athletic Club for their help, support, and work following the events Saturday night. According to Mike Johnson, the Bulldogs’ Athletic Director, “A special thanks goes out to the Ashe County Middle School Atheltics Club. Thanks to them, we were able to hold this event and offer all the different sports to our students.”
The Holiday Fun Day allowed the Bulldogs to get back into the swing of playing prior to opening the last portion of the season. The Blue Bulldogs start their final stretch of the season next Monday with a home game against Central Wilkes at the Middle School, then hit the road on Tuesday for an away game at Johnson County. The Silver Bulldogs also start action again on Monday with an away game at Piney Creek, but then hit the court at the Middle School on Tuesday with a game against Parkway. The wrestlers return to action on January 10 with a home match against East Wilkes, and then are on the road on January 14 with an away match at Central Wilkes.
