In the opening game, the Lady Huskies jumped on the Trojans early with a large 19-4 lead after the first quarter. The Huskies continued to play solid defense in the second quarter and held the Trojans to only three points to possess a commanding 33-7 lead heading into halftime.
The third quarter was the shining time for the Trojans. Alleghany outscored Ashe 13-8 in the third period, but Ashe responded by holding the Trojans to only three points in the fourth quarter to walk away with a 48-23 victory.
In the large victory for Ashe every single player on the roster scored for the Huskies. Alexis Greene and Cara Church combined together for half of Ashe’s points. Scoring twelve points each, they accounted for twenty-four of Ashe’s 48 points to lead the attack for Ashe. Courtney Bowers scored six points, Charity Shatley scored five points, and Lizzie Hanes scored four points. Jessica Walker, Cali Barker, Brittany Lyalls, Amber Monroe, Nichole Shull, and Chandler Christensen each added two points to round out the scoring for Ashe.
Following the JV girls, the JV boys took the court. The JV boys lost the second game of the season to Watauga during the Dr Pepper/ Miller Insurance JV Invitational tournament, but have since then won out on a rampage. The JV boys claimed their second victory of the season over Alleghany with a dynamite 61-20 performance.
The highlight of the game for the Huskies was in the second period switching from their fundamental man-to-man defense to their one-three-one half court trap. After gaining a 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, Coach Scott Grubb thought a defensive change was needed and he made the call at the start of the second quarter. The trap for the Huskies is designed to place pressure on the opposing teams guards, but instead Ashe simply devastated the oppositions guards and only permitted the Trojans to score two points during the entire second quarter. Leading 27-8 at halftime, Ashe cruised to a 47-13 lead at the end of the third quarter, and then the final 61-20 victory.
Leading Ashe County was Sam Price and Jordan Roberts. Price scored fourteen points for Ashe in the post, while Roberts added twelve points from the perimeter for the Huskies. Bryson Payne contributed nine points, Darren Greene and Josh Faircloth added five points each. Aaron Cole followed with four points, Dylan Carter and Jaren Holman added three points each, and Conner Hart, Zack Richardson, and Chris Hamby added two points each to round out the scoring.
The Huskies return to action Friday with an away game at Forbush High School in East Bend. Look for results in next weeks editions of the Jefferson Post.
