On September 11, Lansing Fire Department honored the 343 firefighters killed in the line of duty and also all the other victims of that day in 2001. It was strange, that shortly before 9/11/01 the Lansing Fire Department had a structure fire and a picture was taken of the chimneys remaining, which looked very much like the World Trade Center Twin Towers. The Lansing Fire Department did a great job decorating their trucks with the North Carolina Flag, two American flags, and a New York City Fire Department flag. Also displayed was a picture of the 343 firefighters with the caption “They went in Together, let them stay Together,” and the Stephen Shoemaker print of the firefighters raising the flag at Ground Zero. Many people came to view the fire trucks and the pictures and this brought home the fact that this was a tragic day in the history of our nation that should never be forgotten.
