With two conference losses in their last two games, including a tough one-point loss to North Surry, the Huskies were looking to get back on the winning path last Wednesday and Friday when they hosted the Avery Vikings in a non-conference game, then was on the road Friday for a conference game at North Wilkes. The Huskies claimed two victories, starting with a 74-59 victory over Avery and then a 58-44 victory over North Wilkes.

The Huskies thus far this season has not lost a game outside of conference play and they headed into Wednesday night’s game with Avery planning to go undefeated in non-conference play this year. The Huskies moved to 17-3 on the season after a 74-59 victory over the Avery Vikings. Tavin Holman who had an impressive game with seventeen points led Ashe, and Daniel Waln and Tommy Spagnolo added fourteen points each in Ashe’s victory.

The game opened up with a tight first half with the score tied at 17-17 at the end of the first quarter, and 36-28 in favor of Ashe at halftime. In the third quarter, Ashe came out strong scoring twenty points in the third quarter to gain a fourteen point lead heading into the fourth quarter, 56-42.

Avery made one last run at the Huskies in the fourth but Ashe held tough and cruised to a 74-59 victory over the Avery Vikings to finish the non-conference portion of the schedule undefeated.

Greyson Wells and Ryan Moser led other scorers for Ashe with six points each, Tatum Lemly added five points, Jordan Nichols, Dustin Hamm, and Tucker Clay rounded out the scoring with four points each in the victory for the Huskies.

On Friday evening, Ashe was on the road at North Wilkes for one of the final MVAC games of the regular season. Ashe was able to defeat the Vikings seemingly easy in their first match-up this season, but North Wilkes was prepared for Ashe this time about and led the game at halftime 27-25. Following a 25-17 first quarter, Ashe led by eight points at the start of the second quarter, but North Wilkes held Ashe to only ten points in the second quarter to claim the lead heading into halftime.

Ashe responded in the third quarter, and with an offensive explosion by the guards for Ashe, the Huskies were able to take a ten-point lead heading into the fourth quarter with a eighteen-point third quarter. In the third quarter, scoring opened up with a basket by Tommy Spagnolo in the first minute, and then Ashe’s guards scored the remainder of the points during the quarter to gain the lead. However, in the fourth quarter, it was the opposite for the Huskies. Ashe’s post players took charge in the fourth quarter with a 9-0 scoring run to allow the Huskies to pull away and claim the 58-44 victory at North Wilkes.

Across the MVAC on Friday, the spotlight game was Starmount playing at North Surry for the conference lead. The stakes were simple, who ever won would claim first place in the conference heading into the final week of action before the conference tournament begins next week. Starmount took advantage of North Surry not having the valued services of Brandon West and stand solely in first place of the MVAC standings. Ashe fans would most likely remember West as the player for North Surry that hit the three pointer that gave the Greyhounds the victory over Ashe with three seconds remaining in last Monday’s game against Ashe.

This week in conference action, the Huskies are hosting Forbush tonight for their Senior night ceremonies, then they will be on the road Friday for a crucial game at Wilkes Central. With two victories this week, Ashe will be seeded third heading into the conference tournament, providing North Surry wins on the road at North Wilkes tonight. Starmount is slotted for what has the potential of being a tough game tonight with a road trip to Wilkes Central as Starmount only beat the Eagles by eleven points in the first match-up at Starmount. Following the Wilkes Central showdown, Starmount will then host Surry Central on Friday evening to round out their conference schedule. Forbush is on the road for both games this week, traveling here to Ashe on Tuesday then to North Wilkes on Friday to conclude their regular season.
