Noose incident shocks ASU, chancellor responds

Late Wednesday, the Appalachian State University community learned of an incident on campus involving a noose.

According to an e-mail sent to the students, faculty and staff, a noose was put up by an unknown person (or persons) in a campus building recently. The noose remains a symbol of one of the ugliest parts of the nation’s past, lynching. The symbol has received media attention following a remark about lynching in reference to Tiger Woods by a sportscaster, and by FOX News’ Bill O’Reilly in reference to Michelle Obama, wife of presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.

The university has issued the following statement and news release regarding the incident:
