The 2008-9 Ashe County Teacher of the Year is Jamie Little.

Little is a second grade teacher at Mountain View Elementary School, and has six years of experience as an educator. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and she also earned a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education, both from Appalachian State University.

She began her teaching career at Blue Ridge Elementary as a third grade teacher.

She was in her classroom Thursday afternoon, when School Superintendent Donnie Johnson, carrying a balloon and bouquet of flowers, arrived with the news of her win. Her class applauded her.

Each spring, schools select a Teacher of the Year to represent faculty and staff during the following school year. The Ashe County Schools Teacher of the Year is chosen from among each school’s Teacher of the Year. For 2008-2009, the Ashe County High School Teacher of the Year is Thelma Kastl, Technology teacher. Ashe County Middle School’s Teacher of the Year is Dana Johnson, Math teacher. The Teacher of the Year for Blue Ridge Elementary School is Laura McClure, Spanish teacher. Westwood Elementary’s Teacher of the Year is Sharon Eldreth.

The staff of Mountain View Elementary chose Little as their Teacher of the Year. She will now represent our school district as the Ashe County Schools Teacher of the Year.

Little is eligible to compete in the Northwest North Carolina Teacher of the Year competition, which will begin this September. The following is a quote shared by Little : “My hope is that the skills and knowledge students acquire while in my classroom will continue to help them develop throughout the rest of their lives.”
