Ashe County voters turned out in less than droves Tuesday for a run-off primary between Democratic candidates for Commissioner of Labor, Mary Fant Donnan of Winston-Salem and John C. Brooks of Raleigh.

Mary Fant Donnan won the race not only in Ashe County but statewide, and will face incumbent Republican Cherie Berry in the November General Election.

According to information from Ashe County Board of Elections Supervisor John Shepherd, Donnan received 221 votes in Ashe, or 89.11%, compared to 27 votes for Brooks, 10.89%. There were 248 votes (183 on primary day) cast in Ashe County including those for one-stop absentee, for a 2.19% turnout of eligible voters.

Shepherd said Ashe County’s turnout was above the state turnout of 1.88%. Of the more than 3.9 million eligible voters statewide, 74,767 cast ballots. Donnan received 43,223 votes statewide while Brooks received 20,447. Shepherd said district races in other areas would account for the other 11,000+ ballots cast.
