Adults and kids alike enjoyed the Fiber Arts Day event Saturday at Ashe County Farmers Market. Everyone got a chance to see how sheep are sheared and then how the wool is used to make products. Visitors could even try their hand at the traditional hand-powered “machines.” Extension Agent Charles Young got in some practice at shearing and helped out some neighbors as well when he demonstrated shearing on “Goldie” and “Shirley” (pictured) belonging to Sarah Carmichael and Tom Hansell of Sutherland and also on a ram owned by Celeste von Mangum. The farmers market offers only items grown, made and produced in Ashe County. The market is open every Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with extended hours this Saturday for the festival.
