Clara M. Miller and JoAnn Alexander from Ashe County attended the spring meeting of the North Carolina Tar Heel Legislature in Raleigh June 10 and 11.
The Senior Tar Heel Legislature, established by the General Assembly in 1993, provides information and education to older adults on matters being considered by the General Assembly and makes recommendations on legislative needs of older North Carolinians.
Miller is the delegate and Alexander the alternate from Ashe County. They were privileged to hear a report from Dennis Street, director, and Nancy Warren, adult services program administrator, with the Division of Aging and Adult Services.
The issues committee, including health, long-term care, crime/safety/security, general legislation, enrichment opportunities, and service access, met and narrowed down the resolutions submitted earlier in the year by the delegates and alternates. The October meeting will provide the Senior Tar Heel Legislature an opportunity to select their top five resolutions, which will constitute the legislative agenda for the long session of the General Assembly.
