As summer vacation comes to a close, sights are now focused on the upcoming school year and preparations are underway to ensure that not a single Ashe County student will have to do without adequate school supplies this year.

For the fourth consecutive year, Ashe Federal Bank has placed large collection bins at the main entrances of Wal-Mart for the donations of school supplies. Anything from mechanical pencils to notebooks and protractors will be accepted this week through the conclusion of the tax-free weekend on Sunday.

For the first time, Yadkin Valley Bank will participate in this year’s collection drive. Carolyn Miller of YVB commented on the ongoing event.

"Although this is our first year for 'Stuff The Bus,' we hope to make it an annual event,” she said. Yadkin Valley staff and Ashe County guidance counselors will be disbursing supplies Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon, from Yadkin Valley Bank’s parking lot located on Mt. Jefferson Road across from Wal Mart. Any supplies that are not distributed that day will be divided evenly among all five schools.
