A West Jefferson man was killed in a two car accident shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday night on N.C. Hwy 194 in the Lansing community near Phoenix Church.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Corey Lynn Dugger, 19, was attempting to pass a Ford Ranger pickup truck when his Honda Accura clipped the truck at which point he lost control of his vehicle and flipped several times before the vehicle came to rest after hitting a utility pole and an embankment. The Highway Patrol also stated that he was traveling at an unsafe speed.

Assistant Chief Jeff Venable, of the Lansing Volunteer Fire Department was on the scene of the accident.

“Basically when he tried to pass the truck, he sideswiped it and ran off the road into the grass and turned over several times. In my 26 years as a firefighter, I have never seen the roof of a car flattened to such an extent.” Venable said.

Emergency responders from Warrensville Rescue Squad and Blue Ridge Medical Transport were also on the scene of the accident.
