Ashe County’s Armed Forces Tribute will not only take center stage in the county this weekend but will be seen all across the state on public television and all around the world by military personnel through the Pentagon Channel on Labor Day weekend.
Scheduled for Saturday, August 23 at Ashe County Park in Jefferson, the Armed Forces Tribute will feature an address from Lt. Gen. Thomas M. Metz, paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne All-American Freefall Team, live satellite communications with troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and other locations, display of helicopters and military equipment, recognition of Ashe County veterans, special artwork, food, exhibitors and much more.
Gates open at 8 a.m. and the live broadcast is scheduled 10:30 a.m. to noon. Smoky Mountain Barbeque will have food at 12:30 and Sweetie’s will also have hamburgers and hot dogs. Veterans and active military are free, while families and supporters are encouraged to donate at least $5 for the meal.
Whether you are a veteran proud of having served our country, active military home on leave, or a patriotic American who wants to say “thank you” to those who have served, you are invited to be part of this non-political, non-partisan day of recognition for those who have given of their time to the United States Armed Forces.
