After a tough, and heartbreaking season with no wins last season, the Blue Bulldogs opened up their 2008 campaign with a solid, impressive 6-0 victory over the Wilkes Yellow Jackets. The Blue Bulldogs, defeated their opponents to open up the season last Tuesday at Ashe County Middle School. Four days later, the Silver Bulldogs would also take the field in the season opener, also against the Wilkes Yellow Jackets, and would also claim a victory, scoring a 32-0 shutout of the Jackets.
In the Blue’s triumphant story, Lee Fiero scored the lone touchdown of the game off of a short run in the second quarter.
“The team played really good,” commented Dwayne Farmer, the Blue Bulldogs’ head coach. “Our offensive line played well, with really good blocking, and our running backs ran the ball really hard. We had many, many standout players during the game, and I am just happy for the team.”
This marked the first victory that the eighth grade members of the Blue team saw in their Blue and Silver jerseys as the Blue team did not record a single victory last year. However, they are entering the new 2008 season with a first for the season, and a first for the Blue team.
“This is the first time that we (Blue Bulldogs) have beaten the (Yellow) Jackets,” continued Farmer. “These boys have worked hard so far this season, and have earned it.”
The Blue Bulldogs will return to action this evening at Ashe County Middle School when they host the Watauga 7th grade team, game beginning at 6 p.m. The Silver play Wednesday evening at Watauga High School against the Watauga 8th grade team beginning at 6 p.m.
