As the cooler temperatures and fall foliage usher in another holiday season, the Committee for the Needy Senior Citizens at Christmas is kicking off its seventh edition of Project Star, Appalachian Senior Program officials said.

For many High Country residents, the holidays are a blissful and joyous occasion in which people can gather with loved ones to share experiences from the past year and exchange heartwarming gifts and hugs that console the body and soul until the next delightful gathering.

Although the holidays may be a unique and festive event for most, some of our senior citizens often feel lonely or disenchanted during this time.

In an effort to spread the Christmas spirit, CNSC is asking Ashe County residents to take a star from a Project Star Christmas Tree, which can be located at several area businesses throughout the county, and purchase one of the suggested listed items on the star which will brighten the season for one senior citizen.

Beginning on Nov. 7 after 1 p.m. the Project Star Christmas trees will be ready to spread the holiday spirit as they will be lined up at Food Lion, Wendy’s, and Sallie Mae’s Emporium, ready to disperse “stars.”

In order for all of the area’s senior citizens to fully benefit from this undertaking, all gifts should be delivered on or before Dec. 9 to the Appalachian Senior Programs which is located at 414 E. Main St. in Jefferson. The agencies of ASP, Department of Social Services, Ashe Really Cares, and Spruce Hill Apartments will be responsible for delivering the gifts to seniors.

According to ASP’s press release, Project Star has been successful in delivering gifts to over 1,000 seniors and is hoping to reach more than 200 secluded citizens this year.

Donations can be made to CNSC, at P.O. Box 605 in Jefferson, NC 28640. For more information on how to become involved in Project Star, please call 846-4898.
