Two people were transported to Ashe Memorial Hospital following an accident on Hwy 221 S on Monday afternoon, the Highway Patrol said. According to Patrolman Vic Gammons, who assisted in the investigation, a GDS Recycling truck crossed the centerline in order to miss two stopped vehicles in a curve. One of those stopped vehicles was attempting to turn onto Paul Goodman Road. When the driver of the recycling truck crossed the centerline, his vehicle collided with a dump truck that was heading North on 221, Gammons said. Timothy Byland of Fleetwood was driving the 1999 freightliner when he collided with a 2008 International driven by Nathan Hayes of Fleetwood. Following the accident, pieces of garbage and recyclable items were strewn across the highway, surrounding the mangled vehicles. The red dump truck involved in the accident belonged to the Neil Church Construction company of Fleetwood.
