West Jefferson residents will have the opportunity on Tuesday to consider the town’s proposed renaming of Second Avenue to the Back Street. The board of aldermen will conduct a public hearing this evening at the regular meeting beginning at 6 p.m. at town hall.

Most residents know this street running parallel to Jefferson Avenue as “the back street,” said West Jefferson Town Manager Greg McGinnis, so why not name it that. Visitors coming into town might not know where Second Avenue is, but many already know the back street. Also, the town named the pocket park as the Back Street Park, and monies coming from the Rural Center to build a stage and develop adjacent parking will be easier to coordinate if the park and the street have the same name.

Also at this meeting, residents will have the opportunity to comment in a public hearing about the proposed land use plan, which will update zoning regulations and include a proposal for an extraterritorial jurisdiction for the town.

The aldermen moved the regular December meeting due to a conflict in schedule for members, and also moved the January meeting because of the New Year’s Day holiday. The January meeting will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m.
