Residents interested in the resurfacing plans for Jefferson Avenue in downtown West Jefferson are invited to a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 5,at West Jefferson Town Hall.

Town Manager Brantley Price and Mayor Dale Hudler will explain plans by the N.C. Department of Transportation to resurface the road and discuss other projects in progress.

Price said the meeting will be casual and informative with questions allowed from the audience. He said NCDOT plans to do the resurfacing work on Jefferson Avenue between May 16 and Sept. 30, working at night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Work will not be done during the Christmas in July Festival the first weekend in July.

Members of the West Jefferson Community Partnership are excited about the plans and the potential for completing part of the Streetscape plan developed in 2003 by college students doing a plan for the town to encourage pedestrians and improve aesthetics. Part of the plan involved burying power lines to allow for more attract street lights.

Price said NCDOT will do a pre-construction conference within the next few weeks, and then the town will hold another public meeting to provide an update on the project.

Other projects to be updated by Price and Hudler include an ongoing upgrade by NCDOT of the town storm drains, video of town sewer lines and a stormwater plan.
