West Jefferson Town Manager Brantley Price told the Jefferson Post this afternoon that the traffic lights could come down as soon as tonight.
"The contractor is supposed to be here by eight tonight to start painting, and they'll remove the lights then," said Price. "They might get both tonight, or tomorrow, depending on the weather. But they'll almost certainly be gone by Monday."
The lights up for removal are those at the intersections of Jefferson and Ashe, and Jefferson and Main.
Their removal is part of the ongoing repaving process that will see bumpouts replace the lights. The DOT has said that the traffic pattern in downtown West Jefferson doesn't warrant traffic lights.
A combination of bumpouts and stop signs will serve to funnel, and slow, traffic at the intersections, making them more pedestrian friendly. It should also improve the flow of traffic through town.
