Both teams entered the match sitting in the upper half of the MVAC standings, but it was the Eagles that pulled out the 6-3 win.
“It was a tough match and a tough loss for us,” said head coach Larry Dix.
In singles matches, top seeded Anna Wooten won a tightly contested match with Lauren Delbridge, winning 7-5, 7-5. The battle of second seeded players went to Wilkes Central as Frankie McKinney defeated Haley Maloney 6-3, 6-4. Ashe won the third and fourth-seeded singles matches behind a 6-1, 6-4 victory by Sierra Wilson over Marge Hollis and a 6-3, 7-5 triumph for Z Tugman over Julianna Franklin. Wilkes Central took the final two singles matches to leave the overall match score deadlocked at 3-3. Lindsey Vannoy defeated Peyton Brown 6-1, 6-3 and Emily Faw knocked off Kasey Cursio 6-1, 6-1.
“I am proud of our singles winners – Anna Wooten, Sierra Wilson and Amanda Tugman, who showed a lot ofphysical and mental determination,” said Coach Dix.
The match game down to three doubles contests to determine the winner. Unfortunately for the Lady Huskies, Wilkes Central claimed all three of the doubles matches. McKinney and Hollis defeated Wilson and Tugman 8-2, Vannoy and Faw defeated Brown and Cursio 8-2 and the duo of Delbridge and Franklin downed Wooten and Maloney 6-3 after the match was called early due to darkness.
“Hopefully we can take what we learned from this loss and make ourselves better players,” added Coach Dix.
The tennis team has only one match next week when they will head down the mountain to face a tough East Wilkes team that currently sits in second place in the MVAC.
