Points are awarded based on the top five finishing positions for each team, so the lower the score, the better.
The Lady Huskies tallied 28 points while Alleghany had 34 and East Wilkes with 69 points. Ashe had all five of its top finishers place inside the top 10. Lynde Ring finished in second with a time of 23 minutes, 43 seconds, just three seconds behind winner Mackenzie Blevins of Alleghany. Mac Church finished in third in a time of 23:48 while Chelsea Eller came in sixth in 24:40. Chrissy Simmons and Victoria Reed finished eighth and ninth with times of 25:15 and 25:28.
On the men’s side, Ashe finished the meet with 26 points, good enough to beat East Wilkes’ 40 points and Alleghany’s 61 points. Senior Glenn Bailey finished in first place overall with a winning time of 18:19, beating second place Will Jolly by over 30 seconds. Josh Rees-Jones and Mitch Rees-Jones finished third and fourth with times of 19:12 and 19:32. Tony Mendoza brought home seventh place in 21:49 and Jeff Martin captured 11th place in a time of 22:47.
The cross country squads took part in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference mid-season meet on Tuesday, and will be in action again next Tuesday at Starmount.
Volleyball
The Lady Huskies volleyball team dropped its last two games.
On Thursday, Ashe County fell to Forbush three games to zero. The Lady Huskies then left MVAC play for a non-conference battle against Alexander Central. The Lady Cougars defeated Ashe 3-0.
With the loss, Ashe’s record moved to 4-9 overall and 3-4 in the MVAC.
