Comfortable temperatures and great weather drew 70 players to compete in the tournament, held at Oakwoods Country Club. Since 1984, the tournament has generated over $450,000 to support the mission of the college.
Alvin Huffman, of Northwest Foods, has played in many Henry Moore Golf Classic events. “I have a whole collection of hats from playing in the tournament over the years. I love the camaraderie shared by players at this event,” Huffman says. “But the reason I come back to play year after year is because I like to support the college.”
In addition to playing in the tournament, Huffman also supports the cause by donating the snacks served at the golf tournament.
Billie Moore, widow of Henry Moore, was special guest at the banquet held following the tournament. The centenarian’s late husband was instrumental in the establishment of Oakwoods Country Club and a strong supporter of the college. He was eager to assist with the planning of WCC’s first golf tournament, helping with the layout and details of the tournament as well as being the first player to sign up to play. Unfortunately, Henry Moore passed away a few months prior to that first tournament in 1984. Saddened by the loss of a great friend and supporter, the college officially named the tournament the Henry Moore Golf Classic in his memory. Mrs. Moore was accompanied by family members Heath and Lisa Alexander and Frankie Alexander.

“We are grateful for the support of our sponsors, volunteers and committee members who help to make this tournament a success,” says Mitchell McLean, Golf Tournament Committee chairperson. “We enjoyed a beautiful day of golf at Oakwoods Country Club.”
In addition to the support received by the players and sponsors, the Henry Moore Golf Classic was made possible with the efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers. Volunteers assisted WCC staff with many tasks for the tournament including preparing goody bags for players, monitoring snacks and beverages throughout the event and assisting with registration and event contests. Individuals donating their time and energy to the event were Evelyn Bumgarner, Brenda Bryson, Larry Jordan, Margaret Jordan, Arnold Lakey, Bobby Phillips, Susan Phillips and William Watts.
The WCC Endowment Board Golf Committee, also volunteers, oversaw the operations and planning of the event. Committee members include Chairman Mitch McLean, Linda Absher, Evelyn Bumgarner, Ben Garrett, Danny Holman, Arnold Lakey, Connie McNeill, Phil Stevens and Jay Vannoy.
