Husky passing attack leads Ashe to 35-6 win

Sam Gammons tossed four touchdown passes on Senior Night at Ashe County High School as the Huskies beat the Cardinals, 35-6.

Ashe scored 28 points in the first half and never looked back.

Gammons tossed his first touchdown pass with 13 seconds remaining in the first quarter, finding Eli Gambill for a 29-yard TD strike. Andrew Lopp booted the extra point, giving the Huskies a 7-0 lead.

The senior quarterback was at it again with 10:34 left in the second quarter. This time, Gammons found his favorite target, Matthew Sexton, for a 15-yard touchdown pass, extending the Husky lead to 14-0.

After an East Wilkes turnover, Gammons used his legs to give the Huskies its third touchdown of the game. With 10:01 left in the second quarter, Gammons sprinted into the endzone from 23 yards out.

The Huskies got its final points of the first half with 2:13 remaining in the third quarter. Gammons dropped back and found Gambill for his second receiving touchdown of the day, this one from nine yards out. Ashe was well on the way to its sixth victory of the season, taking a commanding 28-0 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Gammons finished off his outstanding Senior Night performance with his fourth touchdown pass, and fifth touchdown of the day, throwing a 66-yard touchdown strike to Sexton for his second score of the day. Lopp was perfect on the point-after touchdown as he was on the earlier four touchdowns, and the Huskies were putting this game in cruise control, taking a 35-0 lead.

East Wilkes did get on the board late in the fourth quarter when leading rusher Dalton Key scampered into the endzone from 38 yards away. The Cardinals two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 35-6. The Huskies would run the clock out the rest of the way, giving Ashe a big win in the final home game of the season.

The Huskies finished the game with 238 total yards while holding the Cardinals to just 135.

Gammons finished the game completing 6-11 passes for 152 yards and four touchdowns. The senior QB also added 35 yards and a touchdown running the football.

Ashe struggled a bit to run the football against the East Wilkes defense, gaining only 86 yards as a team. Kole Goss led the way with 40 yards on 15 carries.

Sexton had another good night catching passes, grabbing two catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Gambill also had two catches for 38 yards and a touchdown while Jonathan Cox and Cullen Ashley each added a reception.

Defensively, Wesley Moore led the way with 4.5 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss. Tyler Stuart, Kolten Pilar and Nate Price each added 3.5 tackles in the great defensive effort.

The Huskies finished the regular season with a 6-5 record overall and a 5-3 record in the MVAC.

Ashe will now turn its attention to the 2A state playoffs where they will be on the road to face Bandys High School. The Huskies enter the playoffs as the sixth seed in the 2AA West Pod. The winner of Ashe and Bandys will face the winner of Smokey Mountain and Bunker Hill.
