Bailey reaches XC state championship meet

Senior Glenn Bailey will be proudly representing Ashe County in the 2A men’s championship cross country meet this Saturday at Beeson Park in Kernersville.

Bailey finished in 10th place at the 2A Midwest Regional this past weekend in a time of 18 minutes, 28 seconds, good enough to qualify him for the state championship meet. Bailey was also the highest finishing runner of any competitor from the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

Ashe County team members Josh Rees-Jones and Mitch Rees-Jones finished 33rd and 34th with times of 20:45 and 20:48. Jeff Martin and Max Alff also qualified for the regional meet representing Ashe County. Martin finished the race in 58th with a time of 22:35 and Alff finished in 86th in a time of 27:08.

As a team, the men’s runners from Ashe finished in sixth place, just missing a qualifying spot for the state title meet. The top four teams advanced.

For the women, the results were even closer. Ashe County missed qualifying for the state meet by 52 points and ended up finishing in fifth place overall.

Chrissy Simmons was the highest finishing runner for Ashe. The sophomore completed the course in 24:28, good enough for 23rd place. Mac Church finished in 26th place with a time of 24:31. Victoria Reed wasn’t far behind either of her teammates, grabbing 30th place in 24:45. Senior Sarah Spanbauer captured 32nd place with a finishing time of 25:01while Chelsea Eller, Lynde Ring and Leah Hodgson rounded out the final three Lady Husky runners. Eller completed the course in 25:23 (38th place), Ring in 25:24 (40th place) and Hodgson finished up in 28:28 (60th place).
