The JV Lady Huskies entered the season as the two-time defending champion, and the JV Boys entered the season following a second place finish last season, with a 12-2 record.
Thus far this season, the Huskies have earned an accumulative 9-1-conference record, and 24-2 on the season.
The JV Lady Huskies are undefeated in conference, 5-0, with their most recent victory over Forbush coming with a 49-28 final score. Prior to the Falcons match-up, the Huskies defeated North Wilkes on the road with a commanding 47-14 victory. The Lady Huskies have built an impressive 12-1 record for the season.
In JV Boys action, they are 4-1 in the MVAC, and 12-1 on the season. Their most recent victories has been an exciting 40-38 victory over Forbush, to become tied for first place in the MVAC, and a 50-15 romping of North Wilkes on the road.
In the victory over Forbush, the Huskies had a tough game from start to finish. The Falcons entered the game as the MVAC leader with a 4-0 record, but the loss dropped them into a three-way tie with Ashe, and either Starmount or Wilkes Central for the first place of the MVAC.
To open the game, Ashe claimed their biggest lead at the end of a quarter with a 12-8 lead at the end of the first period. In the second quarter, Forbush cut Ashe’s lead to only one-point at halftime, 16-15, and maintained the difference through the third period, where the score stood at 32-31 heading into the fourth and final period.
In the final minutes of the contest, Ashe was leading the Falcons 36-35, but a lay-up by Bryson Payne gave Ashe a 38-35 lead with 1:15 remaining. Dylan Carter was fouled on one of the Huskies’ following possessions and with a made free throw extended the Huskies’ lead to 39-35 with 45 seconds remaining in the game.
Forbush managed to stay within four points of the Huskies, and with 13 seconds left in the contest, Forbush’s leading scorer, Scott, got fouled on a three pointer. Luckily for Ashe, he missed the initial shot, but made all three free throws, cutting the lead to only one-point with 13 seconds remaining.
Zach Richardson was fouled on Ashe’s inbounds pass, and made one of two free throws, giving Ashe a 40-38 lead. Forbush had a desperation shot at the end of the game, that was no good giving the Huskies a 40-38 victory.
Leading Ashe in scoring was Richardson with ten points, and Joe Weaver followed with nine points. Payne and Josh Faircloth each scored six points, Matt Nichols scored four points, Carter scored three points, and Chris Hamby added two points.
Thus far in the season, Payne is leading the Huskies’ offense, averaging nearly 13 points a game.
For the JV Lady Huskies, their recent victories in MVAC play over Forbush and North Wilkes came with large differences in scores. In the victory over Forbush, Alexis Greene led the way for Ashe with 18 points in the contest. Sierra Wilson and Amanda Tugman followed with eight points each. Karanda Weaver scored five points, and Makayla Spencer, Courtney Bowers, and Tiffany Cozart added four points each to round out the scoring.
The JV Lady Huskies look to finish the first round of conference play with an undefeated record this evening when they travel to Wilkes Central. They initiate the four-game series with tip-off at 4 p.m.
The JV Boys following the JV Ladies at 5:15 p.m. and they look to maintain their spot as the first seed in the MVAC this evening at Wilkes Central.
