Local volunteer firefighters hit the burning car with a blast of water to knock down the flames.
A local man's economy car was destroyed late this morning after it burst into flames while being towed by a recreational vehicle.

"I heard a pop and looked back and saw the flames," said West Jefferson's Ron Criss as he watched local volunteer firefighters douse the burning Toyota Yaris.

Criss said he was heading to Florida and had just turned onto N.C. 221 S out of West Jefferson when the flames erupted from the towed vehicle.

Local volunteer firefighters from the West Jefferson Fire Department responded to the scene of the fire. The fire was knocked down within seconds.

Criss said he still planned to make the trip to Florida. "I guess I'll have to buy a plane ticket."

There were no injures.
