An unusually spring-like day last Saturday helped produce a good crowd for an outdoor wrestling match raising money for Easter Seals.

Held in the parking lot at Food Lion in Jefferson, the match featured Brady Hawks versus Muhammed Ishbar with Wrestling All-Star Promotions.

Locally owned and operated, W.A.S.P. conducts charity wrestling matches in the area for such organizations as Easter Seals in the spring and Children’s Miracle Network in the fall as well as events to raise money to help local people in need.

Brady Hawks, aka Gene Brewer, Jr. of Creston, said this was the first year his organization has raised money for Easter Seals.

“Everything we do is a benefit,” Hawks said. “When we first started, we worked with ARC (Ashe Really Cares). People started hearing about us and asking if we’d help with different things. The biggest thing we try to do is keep it family oriented. What you see on TV can give wrestling a bad name, but we want it to be where families want to come and bring their kids.”

The event last weekend offered hotdogs and drinks prepared by Food Lion staff Mike Jones, Lisa Carson and Tina Denny, coupon books, and signed photos from the wrestlers and R.L. Austin, aka Ron Eldreth of Wilkes County, CEO and commissioner of W.A.S.P.

Another special event will take place this Saturday, Feb. 25, at the National Guard Armory in Jefferson. W.A.S.P. will be wrestling to raise money to help Jed Treadway, who is facing medical issues. He worked at the Ford dealership for over 20 years, Hawks said, and has been out of work six months as he takes treatments for varicose veins in his esophagus.

For Saturday’s event, doors open at 6:30 p.m. with wrestling beginning at 7:30 p.m. There will be concessions and a silent auction. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for children age 6-12, and free for children age 5 and under. All proceeds go to Jed Treadway.

The wrestling matches will feature Brady Hawks versus Muhammed Ishbar in a grudge match along with Bruiser Graham taking on D.P. Holiday for the W.A.S.P. Heavyweight title, a W.A.S.P. tag team title match featuring Southside Playas versus Major Havoc and Sgt. Long. Other wrestlers featured include Ironhead Anderson, Scott Hawks, Big Daddy Flip, The Red Dragon, The Cosmic Ranger, Tommy Pain and Evil Radical.

Another event is being planned for April to benefit a local child facing medical issues.
