On May 25, Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation announced the winners of its 2012 academic scholarships. Out of 80 applicants from Blue Ridge Electric's Alleghany, Ashe, Caldwell, Watauga, and Wilkes Counties, three Ashe County High School seniors were chosen to receive scholarships.
Whitney Goodman, the daughter of Tim and Michelle goodman of West Jefferson, received a $2,000 scholarship to attend Lenoir Rhyne University.
Jonathan Greer, the son of Robert and Brenda Greer of Fleetwood, received an $800 scholarship to attend Wilkes Community College.
MacKinsey Johnson, daughter of Steve and Robin Johnson of West Jefferson, received a $1,000 scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Students were selected based on a number of requirements including academic performance, community service, and personal interviews, according to BREMCO Director of Public Relations Renee Whitener.
"Helping today’s youth achieve their academic goals is a good investment in the future and another example of how Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation cares for the community," said Whitener.
