Erika Wudi Burgess


Mrs. Erika Wudi Burgess of West Jefferson passed away Wednesday morning, June 13, 2012 at Charlotte Presbyterian Hospital. She was 71.


Mrs. Burgess was born in Deggendorf, Germany to the late Georg Wudi and Maria Schmid. She was the co-owner of Burgess Furniture, and also a member of First Baptist Church.


She is survived by her husband, Robert Burgess; two sons, Jerry Burgess of Sherrills Ford and Eric Burgess of Charlotte; one brother, Hugo Wudi of Germany; two sisters, Maria Stadler and Irma Knieling, both of Germany; three grandchildren, Emily Burgess, Savannah Burgess, and Tyler Burgess; and several nieces and nephew.


Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Lea and the Rev. Ken Morris officiating. Burial followed in the Calloway Cemetery.


The family received friends from 12-2 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, at First Baptist Church.

Herbert R. Greer


Mr. Herbert R. Greer of Johnson City, Tenn., passed away peacefully, Thursday, June 14, 2012, at his home. He was 82.


He was born in the Fairview Community in Ashe County on Sept. 15, 1929, the youngest son of the late James Madison Greer and Lockie Calhoun Greer. He has lived in Johnson City since 1953. He was a 1948 Graduate of Lansing High School in Lansing, and a 1951 graduate of Artillery Radio Maintenance School in Fort Sill, Okla. After his Army service he attended both Steed College of Technology and East Tennessee State College in Johnson City, majoring in industrial engineering. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army as a staff sergeant in western Germany during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Greer retired from Raytheon Missile Systems Division in Bristol, as a senior designer after 36 years of company service.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Bryan Todd Greer, and his wife Jina “B” Oxidine Greer; brother Oscar Harold Greer; two half brothers; and seven half sisters.


He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Coralie Hartman Greer; son, Jerold Greer and wife, Tracy, and two grandsons, Branson and Grayson, all of Kannapolis; daughter, Carolyn Wylie and husband, Sean, of Johnson City; half sisters, Clara Kincaid of Kincaid, W. Va., and Ruby Denny of Ashe County; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and very special friends.


We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Dr. Amy Proffitt and Dr. Rodney Houghton for taking such wonderful care of Dad for so many years.


The family received friends from 4-6 p.m. on Monday, June 18, at Morris Baker Funeral Home. Services followed at 6 p.m., with nephews, the Rev. Larry Denny and Gary Osborne, officiating.


Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Roselawn Memory Gardens for the service.

Gary Steve Powers


Mr. Gary Steve Powers of West Jefferson passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at his residence. He was 63.


Mr. Powers was born in Hartford, Md., on March 5, 1949 to the late Warren Powers and Mrs. Edna Elliott Couden.


He is survived by two sons, Quinn Powers of Wilkesboro and Chris Wilcox of Bristol Va.; two daughters, Edna Beth Powers and husband, Jamie, of Grassy Creek, and Amy Miller of Millers Creek; mother, Edna Couden of West Jefferson; three brothers, Larry Powers of Laurel Springs, Jerry Powers of Jefferson, and Ray Powers of West Jefferson; one sister, Debra Halloway of Delaware; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.


Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 17, at Boone Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Francis officiating. Burial followed in the Powers Family Cemetery with military rites.


The family received friends from 1-2 p.m. on Sunday, June 17, one hour prior to the funeral service.


The family met at the homeplace of Edna Couden, 1776 Sexton Road, West Jefferson, NC 28694.
