Herbert R. Greer

Mr. Herbert R. Greer of Johnson City, Tenn., passed away peacefully, Thursday, June 14, 2012, at his home. He was 82.

He was born in the Fairview Community in Ashe County on Sept. 15, 1929, the youngest son of the late James Madison Greer and Lockie Calhoun Greer. He has lived in Johnson City since 1953. He was a 1948 Graduate of Lansing High School in Lansing, and a 1951 graduate of Artillery Radio Maintenance School in Fort Sill, Okla. After his Army service he attended both Steed College of Technology and East Tennessee State College in Johnson City, majoring in industrial engineering. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army as a staff sergeant in western Germany during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Greer retired from Raytheon Missile Systems Division in Bristol, as a senior designer after 36 years of company service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Bryan Todd Greer, and his wife Jina “B” Oxidine Greer; brother Oscar Harold Greer; two half brothers; and seven half sisters.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Coralie Hartman Greer; son, Jerold Greer and wife, Tracy, and two grandsons, Branson and Grayson, all of Kannapolis; daughter, Carolyn Wylie and husband, Sean, of Johnson City; half sisters, Clara Kincaid of Kincaid, W. Va., and Ruby Denny of Ashe County; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and very special friends.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Dr. Amy Proffitt and Dr. Rodney Houghton for taking such wonderful care of Dad for so many years.

The family received friends from 4-6 p.m. on Monday, June 18, at Morris Baker Funeral Home. Services followed at 6 p.m., with nephews, the Rev. Larry Denny and Gary Osborne, officiating.

Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Roselawn Memory Gardens for the service.
