The Ashe County Optimist Club returned to the “Girls Got Game” basketball camp at Ashe County High School for its annual Tri-Star Competition.

Earlier in the month, the club hosted the camp for the High Country Hoops camp, hosted by Marc Payne.

This time, it was the girls’ turn at varsity head coach Laura Foster’s summer camp.

Each year, the Ashe County Optimist Club holds these two events for local youth, and hand out awards to the top three performers in three different age groups.

The participants competed in a passing, dribbling, and shooting competition, and were award points based on passing accuracy, how fast they could dribble through cones set up on the floor, and how many shots were made during a the shooting drill.

In the eight and nine-year-old division, Kenadie Hudler took first place, followed by Audrey Craven in second and Weatherly Reeves in third.

Marley Eller captured first place in the 10 and 11-year-old division. Abby Sullivan finished in second place while Macy Spencer finished in third.

In the final age group, the 12 and 13-year-olds competed for the top three spots. Brooklyn Sheets won the competition, followed by Amber Miller in second and Chloe Sullivan in third.

The Ashe County Optimist Club meets on the first Thursday of every month at Smokey Mountain BBQ in West Jefferson. Club president Gwyn Campbell would like to thank Coach Foster as well as all of the participants at the camp.
