Retha Dolores Stansberry
Retha Dolores Stansberry passed away on May 8, 2012, in The Villages, Fla. She was 73.
Born on Dec. 7, 1938 in Boone, Retha grew up in Ashe County and was a 1957 graduate of Jefferson High School. She married David Worth and went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from ASU in 1960. After college, they moved to Japan, the first of a series of posts in East Asia to which her husband was assigned for the U.S. Government. Retha taught English and other subjects in the U.S. and abroad, eventually working as a systems analyst for the government.
Upon retirement, Retha moved to The Villages, where she lived for the past 14 years. She enjoyed the community and made many friends, and could be seen nearly every day driving her golf cart around town, waving and talking to those she met along the way. She was active in The Villages United Church of Christ. She took many trips overseas as a contractor as well as vacations to explore the United States, from which she’d been gone so long, with her closest friends.
She leaves behind two children, Anne Worth (married to Ron Sayer), Chelmsford, Mass., and Jon Worth, Jacksonville, Fla.; two grandsons, Evan and Nathan Sayer, Chelmsford, Mass.; one brother, Ray Stansberry (Doris), Charlotte; one sister, Mary P. Moretz, Boone; nieces and nephews; many friends and neighbors; and her 1957 classmates.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 12, at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson.
A wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, classmate, and friend has gone from our presence.
