Just over one percent of the county’s registered voters turned out Tuesday to help pick candidates for several state races.

According to John Shepherd, director of the Ashe County Board of Elections, Ashe had 1.33 percent, or 248 voters cast ballots in the second primary.

The state had a 3.58 percent turnout of voters.

In races in which no candidate received more than 40 percent of the vote in the May 8 primary, the top two vote-getters faced off on July 17 for their party’s nomination. In addition to several U.S. House and General Assembly seats in other districts, there were run-offs for five statewide offices: lieutenant governor, commissioner of insurance, secretary of state, superintendent of public instruction (all Republican) and commissioner of labor (Democrat).

In unofficial results for Ashe, the following winning candidates will face their state opponents in November.

Lt. Governor (Rep): Dan Forest (137) defeated Tony Gurley (27) and will face Democrat Linda Coleman.

Commissioner of Insurance (Rep): Mike Causey (92) defeated Richard Morgan (64) and will face Democrat incumbent Wayne Goodwin.

Secretary of State (Rep): Ed Goodwin (64) lost to Kenn Gardner (82) in Ashe but won statewide and will face Democrat incumbent Elaine Marshall.

Superintendent of Public Instruction (Rep): John Tedesco (81) defeated Richard Alexander (64) and will face Democrat incumbent June Atkinson.

Commissioner of Labor (Dem): John C. Brooks (54) defeated Marlowe Foster (27) and will face Republican incumbent Cherie Berry.

In local filing for the non-partisan Ashe County Board of Education, only incumbents Lee Beckworth and C.B. Jones filed and will face no opposition in November.

For the non-partisan New River Soil and Water Conservation District, incumbent Jack Krider filed for re-election and will face a challenge from Russell Vannoy.
