Practice for fall sports officially begins today, marking the start of another Husky sports season.
For the women’s tennis team, expectations are always high. Eight of the last nine seasons, Ashe County has sent a doubles team to the 2A state tournament, and for seven straight years, the Lady Huskies have been crowned as Mountain Valley Conference doubles champions.
Three of last year’s top six seeds return as Anna Wooten, Haley Maloney, and Kasey Curcio will be counted on to be the top performers for this year’s squad.
Sierra Wilson, Amanda Tugman and Peyton Brown all graduated and left behind spots to fill by younger players during tryouts that will begin before the season’s first game, slated for August 13.
Wooten and Maloney won the MVAC doubles title last year and represented Ashe in the state tournament.
“They have been working hard over the summer and both of them have improved their game,” said head coach Larry Dix.
Coach Dix also expects that their hard work will also pay off in singles matches, making the team even stronger overall.
The team has been doing conditioning drills over the past few weeks in preparation for practice to start.
