According to Cpt. Carolyn Gentry with the Ashe County Sheriff's Department, Sheriff James Williams and the 911 Center were contacted around 2 a.m. Tuesday morning by Johnson County, Tenn., authorities in regard to a fugitive search.

Jason Eric Stout, age 32, of Fall Branch in Mountain City, Tenn., was arrested in Ashe yesterday following a vehicle chase and his surrender after forcing his way into the Lansing residence of his estranged wife.

Gentry said in a press release that Johnson County had issued a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) early Tuesday morning and asked for assistance in locating a green Chevrolet truck headed into Ashe County that had just been involved in a shooting (late Monday) as a result of a domestic situation.

Ashe County deputies were dispatched immediately to the west end of the county, the press release read. Deputy Jeremy Munday located the vehicle on NC88W. The suspect sped away from Deputy Munday and a chase ensued through the area of NC194 in Lansing and culminated at a residence on Big Piney Creek in Lansing.

The press release read that the suspect jumped out of the vehicle and forced his way into the residence, and that Deputy Munday saw the suspect was armed and called for backup.

Sgt. Danny Dillard quickly arrived on the scene, the release read, and the officers were able to talk the suspect out of the residence and to surrender his weapon.

It was later determined, the release read, that the residence the suspect had forced his way into was the home of his estranged wife.

Officers recovered a large caliber handgun that had been used in the shooting of the suspect’s close family member. This family member is currently in critical condition in a regional hospital.

Stout is currently in the Ashe County Detention Center on a $15,000 bond for charges in Ashe of possession of a firearm by felon; fail to stop for blue light and siren; resist, delay and obstruct officers. He is also being held on a fugitive warrant for Tennessee with no bond. He will have a first court appearance Thursday, Aug. 9.
