Free universal breakfast may be expanding to more Ashe County schools in the future.

In a joint meeting with the board of commissioners and the school board on Monday, Assistant Superintendent Phyllis Yates briefly mentioned expanding free universal breakfasts to more schools.

Currently, both Blue Ridge and Mountain View schools have free universal breakfasts.

Superintendent Dr. Travis Reeves said Yates was making the point that Ashe County’s child nutrition program operates in the black and not the red. “We are very fortunate for that,” Reeves said, adding that most school districts lose money on their child nutrition programs. Having a surplus in that program, Reeves said, allows the county to provide free meals rather than reduced price meals as in the past.

Originally, Blue Ridge was meant to be a pilot to see how the implementation of a free universal breakfast system would work, said Reeves. Upon its success, he said, it was decided the county could expand this service to Mountain View as well.

“Hopefully in the future, we can expand it even further,” said Reeves. He also ssaid that “we are taking this process one step at a time.”
