The season didn’t quite start as the Ashe soccer team had hoped on Monday.
Watauga held off a late charge from the Huskies to pick up a 2-1 victory in the first game of the year for both teams.
Ashe outshot the Pioneers 4-1 early in the second half, but that one shot by Watauga was a goal in the 28th minute from Logan Raichle.
The Huskies had a scoring chance in the ninth minute but junior striker Frank Ledezma saw his shot sail over the goal. In the 12th minute, Jamie Weaver also saw a shot sail just over the net.
Perhaps the best scoring chance of the half came in the 17th minute when sophomore striker Cesar Ruiz attacked the goal from the outside and fired a shot that hit the crossbar and was eventually cleared out by the Pioneer defense. Watauga held a 1-0 score into the halftime break.
The Pioneers found the back of the next quickly in the second half, just two minutes in. Alex Parsons fired a shot by Ashe keeper Braxton Treadway that put Watauga out front, 2-0.
Ashe battled back in the 69th minute when Miguel Ramos got behind the Pioneer defense and kicked a low rolling ball by the keeper to make the score 2-1. The Huskies had corner kick opportunities in the 76th and 77th minutes, but could not get the equalizing goal.
The Huskies will have a week off before its next contest. Ashe is scheduled to travel to Mitchell County on Monday for another non-conference match.
