All nine matches went in favor of the Lady Husky tennis team, beating Alleghany in the season opener.

“This was a great way to start the season. I am very proud of the way our ladies played in their first match,” said head coach Larry Dix.

Top seed Haley Maloney defeated Haley Spurlin in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Second seeded Anna Wooten made quick work of Molly Andrews, winning 6-1, 6-1.

In the battle of third-seeded players, Kasey Curcio got another Ashe win, this one over Kallie Dalton, 6-2, 6-4.

Maggie Witherspoon defeated Lydia Garcia by scores of 6-2, 6-1 in the fourth seeded match.

The final two singles victories for the Lady Huskies went to Mary-Austin Tugman and Hayley Ragland, who were both 6-0, 6-0 winners over Katie Harper and Madison Murphy.

In doubles action, Maloney and Wooten were 8-3 winners of Spurlin and Andrews. Curcio and Tugman beat Dalton and Garcia 8-1, and finally Witherspoon and Ragland capped off the sweep with an easy 8-1 win over Harper and Murphy.

While it was a good start to the year, there are still lots of things to improve on the rest of the way.

“The season is very early and we have a lot of work to do,” said Coach Dix. “We are still trying to decide the best positions for some of our singles players and doubles teams.”

The ladies will return to the court on Monday at Wilkes Central.
