In a match that took almost four hours to play, the Lady Husky tennis team captured a 6-3 win over the Forbush Falcons last Tuesday.
A pair of matches went into tiebreak situations, while most all the matches saw both players competing hard for victories.
“I am very proud of our players,” said head coach Larry Dix.
Haley Maloney and Anna Wooten picked up the first two victories for Ashe. Maloney beat Deanna Wilkins in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 while Wooten easily handled Makayla Pendergrass in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
The Lady Huskies earned victories in the fourth and fifth seeded matches. Maggie Witherspoon defeated Selena Baker, 6-3, 6-1 and Mary-Austin Tugman was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Carmen Wilkins.
For the Lady Falcons, the squad picked up wins from Lauren Hardison and Charley McCormick. Hardison beat Kasey Curcio 7-5, 7-5 and McCormick won a marathon match over Hayley Ragland. McCormick won the first set 6-3, but Ragland battled back to force the tiebreaker by winning the second set 6-2. The Forbush sixth seed took the tiebreaker 7-2.
In the doubles matches, Ashe won two of the three. Maloney and Wooten were 8-2 winners over D. Wilkins and Pendergrass. Ragland and Hallie Brown picked up the sixth and final Ashe win with a 9-8 tiebreak win over McCormick and C. Wilkins. Forbush won the other doubles match as Hardison and Baker were 8-3 winners over Witherspoon and Tugman.
East Wilkes 7, Ashe 2
The Lady Huskies traveled to East Wilkes on Thursday for the team’s first road match of the year. East came away with a 7-2 win to hand Ashe its first loss of the year.
“Overall, I felt very good about our players. This loss provided an excellent opportunity for our team to develop and grow as a team and as individuals,” said Coach Dix. “East Wilkes will probably be one of the best, if not the best, teams in the conference this year.”
In the battle of top seeded players, Kelly Johnson beat Maloney 7-5, 6-0. Maloney was winning in the first set, but suffered a foot injury and was not able to fully recover.
Wooten picked up the lone singles victory for the Lady Huskies. She was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Shanisha White.
The rest of the singles matches were all in favor of East Wilkes. Hannah Brown was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Curcio, Molly Callaway beat Witherspoon 6-3, 6-1, Chrissy Carter beat Tugman 6-4, 6-1 and Marigall Mahaffey handled Ragland in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Maloney and Wooten picked up a big doubles win over Johnson and Brown, beating that duo 8-5. Until this match, the East Wilkes’ top doubles team had been undefeated.
White and Carter were 8-2 winners over Curcio and Tugman while Callaway and Mahaffey were also 8-2 winners over Witherspoon and Ragland.
Overall, Coach Dix was pleased with the team, but felt that there were some things that the team needed to improve on.
“We need to be more consistent in our ground strokes, work on our net play, hit more placement shots, and move more on the court to get in better position,” said Coach Dix. The tennis team will be back in action on Thursday at Elkin.
