It was easily the biggest win of the season for the Ashe County tennis team. Elkin has been one of the top teams in the conference since they joined in 2009, but this season, the Lady Huskies took down the defending champions, winning 9-0.

“This was a great win for the Huskies since Elkin has historically been the conference leaders,” said head coach Larry Dix. “Our team played hard and consistent against the young Elkin team.”

Haley Maloney continued playing as Ashe’s top seed, and took home a 6-3, 6-1 victory over N. Payton. Second seed Anna Wooten remained undefeated on the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Julie Newman.

Third seeded Maggie Witherspoon was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Ally Gentry while fourth seeded Mary-Austin Tugman picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over G.G. Kakouras.

Both fifth and sixth seeded Ashe players, Hallie Brown and Hayley Ragland, capped off a sweep of the singles matches with wins over their Elkin foes.

In doubles Action, Maloney and Wooten were 8-1 winners over Payton and Newman, Witherspoon and Tugman defeated Gentry and Kakouras 8-0 and the duo of Brown and Ragland picked up the ninth and final win of the day for the Lady Huskies with an 8-1 doubles triumph.

“We have a team that is capable of winning the conference this year if they work hard in practice and play consistent and smart in matches,” said Coach Dix.

Ashe improved its record to 3-2 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.

The ladies will hit the court on Tuesday at home against Starmount and will wrap up the week on the road at West Wilkes on Thursday.
