Former Husky Josh Wineberg will be doing what a lot of true freshman can only dream of. He’ll be taking the field as a starter for the first game of his career at Western Carolina.

According to the depth chart released by the Catamounts for its first game against Mars Hill, Wineberg is listed as the starter at right tackle.

A total of four true freshman players are listed as starters for the game as new head coach Mark Speir begins the rebuilding process at WCU and is giving the young guys a chance to prove themselves right away.

Wineberg wrapped up his high school career as the 2011 Mountain Valley Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and was named MVAC All-Conference on offense and defense. He also earned All-Northwest Regional accolades his senior year, and was a three-time MVAC All-Conference performer during his Ashe County career.

Next week, Wineberg and the Catamounts travel to Marshall to take on the Thunder Herd. On Sept. 15, WCU opens Southern Conference play at Wofford, who many media members picked to win the SoCon this season. Western wraps up September with a home game at Samford (Sept. 22) and a road matchup with the Furman Paladins on Sept. 29.

October begins with homecoming against Georgia Southern, the preseason pick to win the SoCon. WCU travels to the Citadel on Oct. 13, followed by another road game at Elon on Oct. 20.

The Battle for the Old Mountain Jug brings Appalachian State to town on Oct. 27. The Catamounts wrap up the season with Senior Day on Nov. 3 vs. Chattanooga, then a non-conference tilt with powerhouse Alabama on Nov. 17.
