Authorities recovered on Sunday, Aug. 26, a 27-foot long Airstream camper and laptop, stolen from Ashe and found in Abingdon, Va.

According to West Jefferson Police Chief Jeff Rose, arrested was Michael Lee Jones, age 39, of 405 Sunset Road in West Jefferson, after he allegedly admitted he had stolen the camper. He allegedly admitted to stealing the laptop as well.

The case was opened on Wednesday, Aug. 22, when Margaret Lindsey reported that her camper was missing from Greenfield.

Chief Rose said, “The girl’s (Lindsey’s) laptop gave out a signal that didn’t pinpoint the laptop’s exact location, but it led police in the right direction.” The signal pointed the authorities to North Jefferson Avenue in West Jefferson.

Rose said officers while searching that North Jefferson Avenue location discovered a grey Nissan Frontier, which matched the description of the vehicle used to steal the camper.

When the police reached Jones, said Rose, he confessed to stealing both the camper and laptop, saying that, while in a panic, he dropped the camper off at a Dairy Queen in Virginia.

Rose said Jones will be facing charges of breaking, entering, and larceny, along with drug paraphernalia charges.
