Ashe County High School auditorium will be the setting for the 11th anniversary remembrance of Sept. 11, 2001, sponsored by the Ashe County Honor Guard.
Events will take place beginning at 7 p.m. with special speakers Larry Adams of Alleghany County and A.B. Weaver of Ashe, music from the high school chorus and a bagpipe player.
Following the ceremony, a parade of emergency response vehicles will take place through the town of West Jefferson.
Lansing firefighter Richard Kirrstetter is retired from the New York Fire Department and lost friends and fellows on that terrible day that numbered 343 firefighters and paramedics in New York among the nearly 3,000 people who died as a result of the terrorist attacks.
On his Facebook profile, Kirrstetter shares a few memories along with photos of the memorial:
“September 11, 2001, we had just finished up with our daughter’s wedding and staying with the McDonalds. John is a retired BC from Brooklyn. The TV showed a plane hitting the first tower and I thought, a lot of firefighters and civilians are going to die. Two days later I with my buddy Pete Haren, both of us from 33 Truck (retired), were at Ground Zero. That day will be forever embedded in my mind and heart. Long days of digging, funerals, and crying. I will never forget Rescue 3 led by their Captain Ralph Tiso; they were way down in a hole looking for survivors. I remember a red steel beam around where they were working; it was red from the extreme heat from down below. I was here for two months, God Bless BC Dennis Devlin, FF Jerry Schrang, & FF Jeff Stark, from Engine 75 & Ladder 33. God Bless the 343.”
