Last week, the men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in two separate meets, including a conference meet at East Wilkes High School.

On Monday, Ashe hosted Watauga in a non-conference event. The women’s team captured first place overall with a perfect score of 15 points. Mac Church took home first place.

At East Wilkes, the women’s team finished third, but only one point separated the top three teams. Church was the highest finishing Ashe runner as she finished in fourth place overall. Other top finishers included Victoria Reed, Chrissy Simmons, Tyler Eller, Chelsea Eller, Alexes Armstrong and Caroline Trent.

On the men’s side, the team took third place in the conference meet. Jonathan Nichols was the highest finishing Ashe runner, coming home in 13^th place. The other top finishers from Ashe were Andrew Tedder, Gareth Berry, RJ Burke, Tony Mendoza, Zach Gouge and Landon Bush.

The XC team will be running this weekend at the High Country Classic in Boone. The women’s race begins at 11 a.m. followed by the men’s race at 11:30 on Saturday.

Volleyball

The Lady Huskies dropped a pair of matches last week, one on the road at fifth place Forbush and the other at home to fourth place East Wilkes.

Forbush beat Ashe three games to zero while East Wilkes held on for a 3-2 win over the Lady Huskies.

The Cardinals took game one 26-24 and game two 25-20. After that, Ashe bounced back to take game three by a score of 25-16, then tied the match up with a 25-21 win in the fourth game. In the tiebreaking game five, East Wilkes held on for a 15-8 win.

Ashe dropped to 1-11 overall and 1-8 in Mountain Valley Conference play.

Women’s golf

Ashe captured third place on Monday at High Meadows Golf Course, finishing with a team score of 161.

Elkin won for the second straight match with a team score of 133. Wilkes Central finished second with 157, followed by Ashe, Alleghany (165) and Forbush (177).

Mary Francis Hall had the best round of the day, shooting a 37. Second place went to Katie Tally of Alleghany (46) with Annika Winebarger in third (46), Catherine Howell from Wilkes Central in fourth (47) and Ashe County’s Madison Little (48) in fifth.

Olivia Barr finished with a score of 56, Katie Girtman and Taylor Price both completed the course with a score of 57 and Madison Ball rounded out the Ashe golfers with a score of 61.
