Each year, the Ashe County Lady Husky volleyball team will put on pink uniforms and ask the fans to wear their favorite pink shirt or hat and donate money to help fight one of the most prevalent forms of cancer.
Half of the proceeds from Tuesday’s game against West Wilkes were donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Yow was a former basketball coach at N.C. State, and battled breast cancer on three separate occasions before her death in 2009.
Through donations and the entry fee for the match yesterday, the team was able to donate $100 to the fund.
As for the match, the Blackhawks came out on top with a 3-0 victory. West Wilkes took game one by a score of 25-22, then went on to win game two 25-16 and game three 25-14.
On Monday, Ashe traveled to Starmount, but lost to the conference leader three games to zero. The Lady Rams won the first game 25-11, and then followed that up with a 25-15 win in game two and a 25-3 win in game three.
The Lady Huskies dropped to 1-14 overall and 1-12 in the Mountain Valley Athletic Conference.
Ashe has three games left in the regular season with two of those coming at home. The Lady Huskies will host Alleghany on Tuesday, Oct. 9, travel to Wilkes Cetnral on Oct. 11 then will have its final home game of the year on Oct. 16 against Forbush.
